Backstage Anxiety

Get ready for a Megan Monday!September 14, 2006The drums are rolling, the ads are printed, the commercial spots are playing - only Three more days until The Megan Mullally Show unveils itself on national television -- can you believe it?! Working on the show has been a blast. Megan is really excited about our premiere. Right now, everyone is so busy getting ready for the show. In fact, tonight Megan's coming in with some special friends to rehearse for Monday's big debut and, believe it or not, the writers and producers are already working ahead on an amazing week two! All I can say is, go get your errands done today and tomorrow because on Monday the only place you'll wanna be is in your living room hanging out with Megan.

From Boozy Socialite to Down to Earth Host

So America's favorite boozy socialite floozy wants to talk.
Yes, we know. While she happily inhabited the colorful sitcom life of campy Karen Walker on "Will & Grace" for eight seasons, Megan Mullally was beloved for her bodacious alter ego's twisted wit and blissfully randy repartee. But it's not Karen who wants to chat up America on a daily basis.
It's Mullally herself, who is switching show business gears this fall to join the daytime talk show carnival with "The Megan Mullally Show." The nationally syndicated gabfest premieres Sept. 18, airing at 10 a.m. weekdays on WDIV-TV Local 4.
"I've just been trying to prepare myself mentally for the drastic change in the intensity of the work," says Mullally. "It's so consuming because it's a talk show. As opposed to being an actor, where you just have to learn your lines, come in and stand there and try to be funny."
During her Emmy Award-winning tour of irreverent chucklehead duty on NBC, Mullally and costars Debra Messing, Eric McCormack and Sean Hayes counted their easy-workday blessings.
"We only worked like three hours a day on 'Will & Grace,' so yeah, it's a little bit different," says Mullally, offering a momentary spritz of sardonic Karen Walker during a stop in Detroit this summer to promote the new daytime conversational gig.
Compared to the relaxing non-grind of a hit sitcom, Mullally acknowledges that being the star of her own talk show will require a whole different approach. "This is every person I meet, everything I see on television, everywhere I go," she says. "Everything is a potential segment for the talk show. So you kind of never stop thinking about it."
Like the down-to-earth, more lighthearted daytime talk shows hosted by Ellen DeGeneres and Rosie O'Donnell, "The Megan Mullally Show" will be a mix of talk and variety, featuring celebrities, real people, music and comedy. "I'm basically stealing my things from all the talk shows I've liked over the years," jokes Mullally, citing everyone from David Letterman and Johnny Carson to Merv Griffin and Dinah Shore as influences. "For example, the way Letterman uses all his crew and staff. I like the backstage stuff. "We're also going to do a lot of field pieces," she adds. "We're going to have correspondents, a la Jon Stewart, although not political. So we'll have people out around the country all the time, which is great."
There's also a pretty fair chance that Mullally, 47, a seasoned stage actress who has appeared in Broadway revivals of "Grease" and "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," occasionally will share her musical flair with the daytime audience. That may even include an appearance with her band Supreme Music Program, a cabaret and concert combo that allows Mullally to keep in touch with her inner chanteuse.
"It's my favorite thing. It's the least commercial band in the history of music," she says. "We do all covers ... pop, rock, blues, jazz, country, you name it. We even do some crazy classical stuff, some art songs."
Memorably, Mullally's crackers Karen and Hayes' wacky Jack shared a tender musical moment on the "Will & Grace" series finale as they sang a duet of the old Nat King Cole standard "Unforgettable." Also unforgettable has been the rapid transition from a prime time sitcom to a daytime talk show. But it's helped Mullally recover from the emotional breakup of "Will & Grace" after an eight-year run. Within days of filming the series finale last spring, the show's familiar apartment sets had been taken down.
"It was brutal. I had personally prepared myself for the worst, and it exceeded my wildest expectations," says Mullally. "It was so sad. It was kind of like going to high school and college with the same group of people for eight years. And not only all graduating at the same time, but then they burn the school down." Now Mullally is about to occupy a whole new TV schoolhouse.
But while giddily acerbic Karen always loved to have the last word, Mullally has figured out that being a good listener who doesn't make cheap wisecracks is what a quality talk show host is all about. And when she was seeking tips and advice from various famous talk show hosts, including Jay Leno and Rosie O'Donnell, she found a kindred spirit in Conan O'Brien. "He and I are both self-described people pleasers," observes Mullally. "He's real good to his guests. He'll always take the hit.
"You know how some people make jokes at the expense of others. I don't anticipate going down that road. My nature is to try and make everybody happy." Making jokes at the expense of others? Karen Walker was a naughty dynamo of such sarcastic darts.
But for the new, ready-for-daytime Megan Mullally, making nice is just doing what comes naturally.

Megan's Q&A with TIME magazine

The Will and Grace co-star talks to TIME about her venture into daytime televisionIn the eight years she co-starred on NBC's hit comedy Will & Grace, Emmy-winning actress Megan Mullally perfected the swagger, voice and over-the-top attitude — part-Mae West, part-Minnie Mouse — of rich diva Karen Walker. Now Mullally — who won her second Emmy on Sunday for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series — is venturing into daytime television as host of The Megan Mullally Show, a syndicated talk/variety series that debuts Sept. 18. TIME's Jeanne McDowell talked to Mullally about the challenges of daytime yakking, life after Will & Grace and why she and Sean Hayes (who played flamboyant Jack) made such a great couple.TIME: How did you feel when you heard your name called as the winner of the Emmy?Mullally: I thought of all the great years we had on the show and how I will miss all of these wonderful people who I went to work with everyday. I wanted to try to convey the idea that it was a group effort, the combination of crew, staff and cast. The daytime television landscape is a graveyard of tanked talk shows. Why do you want to jump into that?I loved talk shows growing up. When I was old enough to stay up that late I use to watch Johnny Carson and Merv Griffin and variety shows like Carol Burnett and the Smothers Brothers. Then I sat in for David Letterman and really liked it. I wasn't nervous at all. Also, it was so satisfying playing the character of Karen that after eight years I didn't have a real big desire to play another character. So when NBC-Universal called about doing a talk show, it was an offer I couldn't refuse. What will differentiate your daytime talk show from all the others? The answer is me, I guess. There will also be a lot is variety — 60 or 70% celebrity guests and original sketches. We have an opening sketch that we call the "Megalogue" and a super interactive web site which is part of my secret agenda to get away from the crush of the "celebrity culture."So what do you want your show to be like?I've been a guest on a lot of talk shows and sometimes it has felt like I'm being fitted into a format. I don't want to force anything on my show. I'm not afraid if something uncomfortable or unexpected comes up during the course of a segment. I'm okay with not being funny for five minutes. And I don't want my guests to feel that they have to ride a unicycle or swallow flaming keys for laughs. I don't want them to feel pressure to set the world on fire.Speaking of guests, why Will Ferrell for your first show?He was the one person I wanted. To me he represents the best of popular culture. He's very versatile and super-talented. He's like a modern-day Jimmy Stewart. And he's full of goodwill. There's no negativity about him.Who are some of your other dream guests?Like everyone else who does this I'd love Meryl Streep, Tom Cruise, Barbra Streisand ? all the A-list stars. Then I have my weird people who I want to have on like Tom Waits and Randy Newman. How about your Will & Grace co-stars?For sure, but probably ladies first. Though we had a funny idea for Sean Hayes. Back in the old days when Dinah Shore was going out with Burt Reynolds she had a cooking segment on her show where she opens the oven and Burt is in there. We thought of something like that — have Sean hiding in a kickdrum. On Will & Grace Karen Walker's voice became her signature. How did you come up with that voice?I don't know. I'm not an analytical person. I act on instinct. I got the first script and thought "how can I make this the funniest?" and for some reason that voice came out of me.Karen and Jack were such a great duo. What was the secret of their chemistry?Sean and I have a strong connection. He is one of the most important people in my whole life, and probably always will be. I think of him as my second husband. He's my back-up plan. I guess that chemistry spilled over onto the show. Karen was sort of the fabulous gay man that Jack aspired to be.What made Karen such a funny character? She was likeable in that she was happy and filled with joy. She was very childlike and that part of her could pop out at any moment. And although she had so many despicable behaviors, she never had any ill will towards anyone and was always trying to do the right thing. So it put a weird spin on her as a character. Will & Grace was groundbreaking in its portrayal of gay characters. What is the enduring legacy of the show?We went into Will & Grace with warnings that we would be attacked for the gay characters, but it never happened. Our show was never political. The fact that our lead character was a regular guy who happened to be gay allowed him to be accepted. We got letters from viewers who said the show helped make it possible for them to come out. We started to realize that something was happening to our little shuck-shuck comedy. When we went to the GLAAD awards and people stood up and applauded, I started crying — I'm such a geek!. It was a very emotional moment because at the end of it we saw the impact the show had.Do you miss Karen Walker, and would you ever bring her back?I would totally do it again. In our promos for my new talk show there's a split screen with the real me on one side and Karen on the other. She says she's coming with me to my talk show and I have to break it to her gently that she can't.

Megan in the Works

Like the old saying about politics, all syndication is local. That is particularly true for NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution's "The Megan Mullally Show," said Sean O'Boyle, senior VP and general sales manager for the company. Unlike a straight talk show that covers the topic of the day or a strictly formatted court series, "Megan's" tone incorporates comedy, celebrity chat and the host's unique personality. To help viewers understand that, "Megan" needs to be positioned with creatively compatible shows. "When you have a show like 'Megan,' you really have to target it," Mr. O'Boyle said. "You want to match a show to a station's personality." Without a network or a common feed, promoting syndicated shows is tough for companies like NBC Universal, since a "check your local listings" reminder at the bottom of a national ad weakens the message to potential viewers. "Megan" has the benefit of a station group sale on its sister NBC station group, and the syndicator has been sending Ms. Mullally out to key markets to promote. But it's nearly impossible for her to visit every one of the more than 100 markets where the show is airing. Targeting is important not only in terms of creative fit. It also ensures NBC Universal is working with the most enthusiastic stations for their product. That enthusiasm translates to market-specific, station-led promotion, something NBC Universal can't buy. That's what NBC Universal did in Orlando, Fla., where "Megan" has been cleared on WFTV-TV, the Cox Communications-owned ABC affiliate in the 19th-largest market. Scheduled to air at 10 a.m. (ET), "Megan" is filling the spot previously held by Buena Vista's canceled strip "The Tony Danza Show," explained John Keyes, program manager for WFTV. "Megan" will have the game show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" as its lead-in. Taking a cue from NBC Universal, which is touting "Megan" as a comedic talk show with many humorous elements, Mr. Keyes is hoping the Monday-through-Friday series lives up to its promise, because its tone makes it appropriate for the time period. "This show is more of an entertainment vehicle for what they are planning it to be, rather than a more serious talk show, which works more with a game show element," he said. "Danza," which also contained more comedic and entertainment elements than the average talk show, did well in Orlando, Mr. Keyes said, so he also expects "Megan" to perform at 10 a.m. "It should fit better in the morning," he said. "It will have a platform to start gaining viewers from." Competitively in Orlando, "Megan" faces soap opera "Guiding Light" on the CBS station, part two of morning show "Today" on NBC, a court block on the Fox station, a comedy block on the MyNetworkTV station, a potential talk competitor on the soon-to-be CW station and local news on WFTV's own independent duopoly. "It's a competitive time period," Mr. Keyes said. "We're expecting 'Megan' to hopefully do well against those shows if they do what they say they going to do." Specifically, Mr. Keyes is expecting "Megan" executive producer Corin Nelson to deliver the kind of show she produced when she was running Telepictures' "The Rosie O'Donnell Show." "We're expecting that experience to play into it, and we hope it plays into it strongly, but as you know, all talk shows are a risk," he said. Dozens of "can't miss" talk show talents have come and failed in the marketplace, Mr. Keyes said, noting that relatability and ability to entertain are the two most important elements for success on his station. "That's no guarantee it works," he said. "It's more who's running the show and how they can make that show resonate with the viewers." Pairing 'Megan' in Milwaukee "Megan" is currently cleared in about 95 percent of the country, mostly on traditional affiliates, Mr. O'Boyle said. The show is scheduled to run in early fringe, the time periods between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. (ET), in a few key markets-most notably on the NBC Universal-owned stations in New York and Los Angeles. But the bulk of clearances have been in the morning. ABC affiliate WISN-TV in Milwaukee is one of several Hearst-Argyle Television stations going with "Megan" in the a.m. "We do very well in that whole morning block," Dean Maytag, WISN's director of broadcast operations, said, noting that the show is scheduled for 11 a.m. (CT), replacing NBC Universal's canceled daytime reality series "Starting Over." The station runs Buena Vista TV's "Live with Regis and Kelly" at 9 a.m. and ABC's "The View" at 10 a.m. "'Starting Over,' frankly, did pretty well," Mr. Maytag said, noting the show won its time period in female demos in July. "But we're in a really good position with 'Megan.' It's good flow." Competitively, "Megan" will face Telepictures' debuting talker "The Dr. Keith Ablow Show" on the Fox station, local news on the NBC affiliate, "The Young and the Restless" on CBS, a comedy block on the MyNetworkTV station and possibly "The 700 Club" on the new CW affiliate. WISN in Milwaukee promotes its syndicated shows "pretty heavily," Mr. Maytag said, explaining that the NBC Universal spots touting the show have been in heavy rotation. "People are commenting on them, which is rare," he said. "We like the spots. They have a nice feel." Ms. Mullally recently did a live satellite shot for the station at a summer sales party that featured local advertisers. "It was very nice," Mr. Maytag said, "It was very helpful." Like Mr. Maytag, Orlando's Mr. Keyes is looking forward to "Megan" fitting in with the current schedule. But Mr. Keyes pointed out that his station has much to offer "Megan" as well. "This is a good platform for a show like that," Mr. Keyes said. "If it doesn't work here, that's usually a sign it's probably not going to do well, because this station is going to give it a good platform to work."

Gone but never Forgotten

NBC's hit show Will and Grace finished its 8th season with a bang. The shows finale' captured what Will, Grace Karen and Jack would be like 20 years in the future. Jack inherited Beverly Leslie's big money, Karen lost her 'fortune' and turned to Jack for financial issues and moved in with him. Grace named her baby girl Laila, and raised her with Leo, and Will has a baby boy named Ben. Jack and Karen pull one on Will and Grace and claim that one of them is in a full body cast with all of their bones broken just to get them both together in the same room. Laila and Ben go to the same college, and find out they have dorm rooms right acroos the hall from one an other just like Grace and Will did. They decide to get married, and Grace is complaining because she has to pay for everything, and of course Will is thrilled haha. The gang decides to go to the bar that the bar tender made Will and Grace kiss because he thought they were married. They drink a shot each ( of course Karen wants the whole bottle), Jack decides to say 1-2- 34 slammin w**re. The each kiss one an opther, and the episode is Finished!!!!
